Fort McMurray is an urban service area that forms part of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northeast Alberta. The key heavy industries in this area are concentrated on the oil and gas industry due to its proximity to the Athabasca Oil Sands; gas and pipeline transport and forestry.
Under the Consolidated Land-Use By-Laws of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which oversees the development of industrial land use for Fort McMurray, General Industrial Land is classified for the following purposes:
The processing of raw or finished materials
The manufacture and assembly of goods, products or equipment
Repair and service of materials necessary for heavy industrial use
Storage and shipping of materials and equipment including petrochemical products and supplies
Support areas for general industries.
Land use in Fort McMurray and its surrounding areas are owned by the Province of Alberta on behalf of the Crown. Because of this, land development in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo requires arrangement in its urban land base to accommodate industrial growth among other developments. The following industrial zones are located in and around Fort McMurray:
Taiga Nova Eco-Industrial Park, which has 25,864 sq. ft for lease
Along Highway 63, north of the City Centre
Mackenzie Industrial Park, which has 364, 748 sq. ft for lease.
Airport Lands along Saprae Creek Trail
L. Robert Industrial Park, which has 29,087 sq. ft for lease
CN Lynton Facility
Prairie Creek Business Park which has 287.80 hectares for industrial use.
These industrial areas are concentrated along Highway 63. Industrial yard spaces located within the vicinity of Highway 63 and TaigaNova Crescent are used for:

Manufacturing (Lafarge Fort McMurray, Inland Concrete)
